Fighting Festival in Himeji

Hey everyone. Sorry I haven't been updating my blog over the last month - I promise to make a habit of it over the next few weeks.

Four weeks ago me and Ryan went to Kenka Matsuri (fighting festival) in Himeji, our local city. It was just fantastic experiencing a Japanese festival. The atmosphere was amazing, and there were stalls on every corner selling fried chicken and cold beers!! The festival was centred on an arena at the junction of three roads where hundreds of near-naked Japanese men were fighting with floats. Each float was massive and took dousens of men to carry. The idea was to ram your float into other floats and try to knock them down - this seemed bizarre considering each float weighed so much and many of the men carrying them were drunk. Surely someone was either going to die or at least get seriously hurt. Every time a float crashed to the ground an almighty thud rang around the makeshift stadium (there were terraced grass verges on three sides of the a fighting area and every inch was packed full of spectators). We asked around but it seemed all seats had been reserved before the day. So we stood in the street crammed in haplessly with other seatless souls and vulnerable to brushes with fate every time a new float entered or exited the arena.

Go reds!!!

Go greens!!!

A float being carried through a gate.

Two floats battling it out.

And still fighting!

Good work lads!

And why not throw in a dragon for good measure too?!
